Shopping for the perfect pair of jeans is very needle-in-a-haystack-y. But for the petite, the search is even more winding. Just when you've found a pair with the right rise, shade, and waist-to-hip ratio, you realize you need to trim the length a half-foot. To save you a trip to the tailor, we asked ten stylish women — all five-foot-three or shorter — about the denim that fits them just right. These photographers, content creators, shop owners, and more have excellent style and have tried on lots of denim so you don't have to. "Petites should feel confident about their stature and not feel treated like an afterthought," says Jenny Wang, who founded the petite-clothing shop Petite Studio NYC with that in mind. You'll notice that while there are plenty of cropped and short options on here, there are also some that aren't petite-specific, but the women we spoke to say they still fit their frames. To make your search even easier, we sorted them according to fit and style for easy reference — straight-leg, skinny, flare and bootcut, wide-leg, distressed, and plus-size.
Straight-leg
Straight-leg jeans were recommended the most because they're more frequently offered in short inseams than other styles. A couple of the people we spoke to also say they're the most flattering style. Amy Serrano, who's a content creator, "adores this pair" from Agolde. She says the brand "makes those jeans that just ooze 'cool girl!'" and this high-waisted, straight-leg style "definitely levels up my fits even if I'm just pairing them with a T-shirt." While they're meant to be cropped, Serrano, who's five feet, says that they "hit right at my ankle and [are] the perfect length for a full-length jean." Jessica Turk, another petite content creator, is equally obsessed. She calls them her "dream pair of straight jeans" because they're "very flattering on my frame and accentuate curves in all the right places."
The Levi's Wedgie straight jeans have shown up before on roundups of jeans recommended by cool people and even jeans that Strategist editors own, so it wasn't a surprise that they were brought up once again. "For someone who's afraid to step out of their comfort zone and try a different pair of jeans, I think these are the perfect pair to start with," Turk says of the "universally flattering" jeans. Their 26-inch inseam is the "perfect length" for her, and she appreciates that the jeans are 99 percent cotton. "One of my favorite things about these jeans is that they are super-soft, but are non-stretch, so they really hold their shape," she says.
For a pair of Levi's with an even higher waist, Serrano recommends the Ribcage Straight Ankle jeans. "This pair gives me legs for days because of the ultrahigh waist. It hugs what it needs to hug and the rest of the leg is a nice relaxed straight fit," she says. Serrano opts for darker washes because they "truly feel versatile to dress up or down."
Lwany, who runs a fashion newsletter for petite women, says the AG Phoebe cut is excellent. She owns a black pair, which is out of stock, but she recommends this pair since "the panelling looks very elongating." The inseam measures 28 inches, which fits Lwany's five-foot-two frame. For anyone shorter, she says that "folds at the bottom of jeans are becoming acceptable … I think that's something that shorter women should embrace right now. Those looks translate to a nonchalant cool silhouette."
These Abercrombie ultra-high-rise jeans came recommended by two of the people we spoke to. "They're perfect for my curvy body and are available in a short length and even extra-short," says photographer Lizbeth Hernandez. The style is Serrano's favorite pair at the moment, and she also highlights the convenient extra-short inseam option. She likes that the flattering fit "hugs every part of my butt perfectly" and notes that they're so comfortable, she wore them while doing "a round of high kicks with the Radio City Rockettes."

"Finding jeans has always been my strong point because I wear them practically every day," says five-foot-two artist and writer Jo Rosenthal. She's "always searching for that worn-in feel" when it comes to denim, so she often shops vintage. 9th Street Vintage is one of her go-tos since it offers a "huge selection" and the shop lists detailed descriptions of its jeans online. These Lee's jeans are her ideal pair of straight-leg jeans that would fit "petite li'l me."
Skinny
"Skinny jeans are always going to be around," says curly-hair content creator Kristian Spraggins, who's five-foot-three. She particularly likes this Zara pair because it's high-waisted and features a side split that "shows just the right amount of leg." These flattering jeans don't pool if they're a little too long and also allow people to see your shoes — unlike wide-leg cuts.
For a more traditional pair of skinny jeans, Turk recommends these from ASOS. "I've owned these for a couple of years and they still look as great as the day I bought them," she says. The jeans come with a 26-inch inseam, which hits "exactly at the top of [her] ankle, not below it, so it's the perfect ankle jean." She notes that it also comes in a 28-inch inseam, which might be more fitting for anyone five-foot-two or taller.
Flare and bootcut
For a subtle flare option, Jenny Wang, the founder of the shop Petite Studio NYC, likes Mother's Insider jean. She says this is her "all-time favorite" pair as a lover of flare jeans. The length is more of a full-length flare on her five-foot-two frame, rather than cropped. She likes the jean's soft and stretchy material but notes that it is thicker. "[It's] probably too hot for summertime, but great for spring, fall, or winter," she says.
American Eagle offers its flare jeans in a range of inseam lengths, which Serrano appreciates. Its flare is more dramatic than the Mother Crop Jean. These are a pair Serrano "recently fell in love with" that she styles with boots or high heels. She also likes that "they're made with a bit of stretch, so it flatters the body so perfectly."
Wide-leg
Wide-leg jeans are hard for petite women to shop for. Despite being a style short people tend to avoid, some of the women we spoke to said they make them look taller. Turk recommends going for a super-high-waisted wide-leg jean, like these from H&M. "The waistline elongates your legs and makes you look taller," she explains. "The bottom of the pants adds some width to my petite frame and creates an expanding illusion." These work for her because they're "tight and high-waisted on the top, and seamlessly transition to a wider leg on the bottom." Turk likes them so much that she owns them in two washes — denim-blue and black — and wears them constantly.
Spraggins also mentioned the elongating effect of wide-leg jeans. She typically styles this pair from Zara with heels for a more put-together look. She notes that since "they make you look taller than you are, you don't really have to wear heels all the time — you could wear sneakers and still look really tall."
If you're worried about the last pair being too long, petite and curvy style blogger Alyssa Marie recommends going for a cropped pair of wide-leg jeans. She's five feet and these "extremely flattering" jeans from Zara hit "perfectly at the floor."
Distressed
"TopShop Dad jeans are my current favorite," says Lwany, who owns two pairs of them — the mid-wash and this distressed pair. She recommends this particular pair because the distressing isn't right at the knees, but higher up instead. "I don't recommend the double-ripped knee pair because the placement of the rips is too low on the leg and shortens your figure. Generally speaking, the elongating thing to do is opt for pants with design features placed high on the leg."
These AE distressed jeans do have distressing right at the knees, and five-foot-tall Alyssa Marie says they're "incredibly flattering." She likes the "casual and edgy" look of these straight jeans and that they "come in so many lengths," including short (26") and extra-short (24").
